This gravestone belongs to Almira C. (Peugh) Carruthers and her husband James Carruthers. Almira was one of early GSD students when GSD opened in 1846. She was the only female student in class. Before GSD opened, Almira was a student at American School for the Deaf in Hartford, Connecticut. She then made the history by becoming the first female teacher at GSD. No face picture of her yet so far…hope to find it soon. Today is her birthday! She would be 188 years old! Let’s shout…Happy Heavenly Birthday to Almira, GSD’s first female teacher! ♥️
